They feed on blood — then hide
Adult bed bugs are flat and oval, about the size of an apple seed. They're brown until they feed, then reddish and swollen. By day they tuck into seams and cracks; at night they come out for a blood meal.
They hitchhike into homes
Bed bugs usually arrive on luggage, clothing, gym bags, purses, or secondhand furniture — not because a home is dirty. Once inside, they settle near where people sleep.
They show up in more places than bedrooms
Homes, apartments, and hotels are common, but they also turn up in dorms, nursing homes, offices, theaters, and even on buses or planes when people travel.
Urban areas see them more often
