What to know about roaches.
Fast, nocturnal, and quick to multiply. Here's how to tell which roach you have and why it matters for treatment.
German roaches are small and tan with two dark stripes behind the head — they're the ones that infest kitchens. American roaches are much larger and reddish-brown, often coming up from drains and basements. Oriental roaches are dark, nearly black, and stick to damp areas. All of them run for cover when the lights come on.

The species determines the treatment
German roaches breed indoors in kitchens and bathrooms. American and Oriental roaches usually live in basements, drains, and sewers and wander up. Treating one like the other wastes time, so identification comes first.
They multiply quickly
A German roach egg case holds 30 to 40 eggs, and a female produces one every few weeks. A few roaches behind the refrigerator can become an established infestation in a couple of months.
They're a real health concern
Roaches pick up bacteria from drains and garbage and track it across counters and food. Their droppings and shed skins are also a documented asthma and allergy trigger, especially for kids.
Seeing them in daylight means pressure
Roaches are nocturnal. When they're out during the day, harborage areas are usually crowded — a sign the population is bigger than it looks.
Moisture matters as much as food
Roaches can go weeks without food but not without water. Leaky pipes, sweating drains, and damp basements are what keep populations comfortable.
Foggers make it worse
Bug bombs push roaches deeper into walls and can spread an infestation to new rooms — and they leave residue everywhere except the cracks where roaches actually live. Baits placed at harborage points do the opposite.
Often confused with water bugs and beetles
"Water bug" is usually just an American or Oriental roach, and some ground beetles get mistaken for roaches too. The distinction changes the treatment, so a photo or inspection is worth it before assuming the worst.
